Sharon was set off from Stoughton in 1765 and built around Lake Massapoag, a 353-acre kettle pond that gave the town its summer cottages in the early 1900s and its year-round lakefront neighborhoods after the war. The center along South Main Street keeps its 1800s houses. Around the lake and out toward Route 95 the housing is 1950s and 1960s ranches, splits, and colonials, then the 1980s and 1990s subdivisions with finished basements on the wooded hills toward Foxborough and Walpole.
