Stoughton was a shoe town. From the 1800s into the 1900s the factories around the center and the Stoughton Square station turned out boots, and the streets around them filled with the two-families, cottages, and small colonials of the workers. After the war Stoughton became a bedroom town for Boston, and the 1950s capes and ranches off Route 27 and Route 138 are still the largest share of the housing, followed by 1960s and 1970s splits and colonials toward Sharon and Canton, and condominiums from the 1980s on.
Stoughton sits on the divide between the Neponset and the Taunton River, and it is flat and wet in the low parts.
